Defensive Reads and Catcher's Backing Up Throws

By: Bear

Dear Tony,

Lot's of combinations to consider.
But let's try to get thru this for you.

First off, the leader on the field
must direct traffic, so with this
in mind, do some homework and learn
what your coach want to do with
situational defensive alignments.
(You may even offer suggestions
if an appropriate.....however, tread
lightly here to begin.)

A catcher must 'read' all runners
and all balls hit off the bat before figuring out where he goes (& everybody else on defense.) So.....it's a catcher's
(delegated) duty to help all understand
this (if granted by head coach)

After 'reading' the situation, the catcher
breaks for the area behind first base
to 'back up' throws under the following.

Single to LF w/ No Runners on base.
Single to LF w/ Runner on 3rd.
Single to CF w/ No Runners on base.
Single to CF w/ Runner on 3rd.

A catcher must 'read' and then trail hitter at 1b (for throw from RF - e.g Pitcher backs up between 1b and Home).
Single to RF w/ No Runners on base.
Single to RF w/ Runner on 3rd.

A catcher must 'read' and 'stay' around
the plate for the following:
Single to LF w/ Runner on 1b.
Single to LF w/ Runners on 1b & 3rd.
Single to CF w/ Runner on 1b.
Single to CF w/ Runners on 1b & 3rd.
Single to RF w/ Runner on 1b.
Single to RF w/ Runners on 1b & 3rd.

See if you can then chart how
you want your defensive alignments
for other situations:

cheers
Bear
