Tag Play at Plate
By: Catching CoachHere’s how I teach this play at all levels.
.After ball hit catcher moves 3 feet up third base line
.Left foot is set 4-6inches inside the baseline in fair territory
.Left foot is pointed straight up 3rd baseline to prevent side impact if any to the knee.
.Player assumes wide stance with right foot pointed at spot where 2nd baseman usually stands.
.Player bends knees to assume a low, powerful stance.
.This position allows the catcher to use this position regardless of where the throw is coming from.
.In this position the runner has a clear path to the plate but is encouraged to take a slightly wider path to the back half of the plate.
.Mask stays on!!! No reason for removing.
.By always using this same setup my fielders always know where the catcher will be. Have never understood why a ball hit to the right side of the field it was felt the catcher had to be on the right side of the plate to take the throw. It’s only 3 feet farther to the left to get the ball to where my catcher sets up, and he always will use the same position. All it requires is the fielders to throw to the glove.
